Lincomycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that comes from the actinomyces Streptomyces lincolnensis.
Lincomycin inhibits the protein synthesis in susceptible micro-organisms by binding to the 50S subunit of bacterial ribosomeand by inhibiting the peptidyl transferase enzyme. Lincomycin is effective especially on Gram positive and anaerobe bacteria (Bacillus sp., Corynebacterium sp., Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, Stapylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp.(except Enterococcus spp), Campylobacter sp., Actinomyces sp., Bacteroides sp. (including Bac. fragilis), Clostridium perfiringes, Fusobacteirum sp., anaerobe coccus).
Lincomycin is absorbed well from the intestine after oral administrationand reaches peak plasma concentration in 2-4 hours. Lincomycin is carried via plasma proteins to 70% and is found in high concentration especially in mucus. Good distribution in bone tissue, in pleural and peritoneal fluids even without inflammation. Cumulates in infection area by polymorph-nuclear neutrophills. Elimination is with feces (77%) and urine (14%).
MEDICALINis used in chicken and turkeys for the treatment of Mycoplasma, Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria complicated CRD or air sacculitis, Coliform infections, necrotis enteritis (Clostridium perfringens) and dermatitis.
