Tylosin is a macrolide-class antibiotic used in veterinary medicine. It has a broad spectrum of activity against gram positive organisms and a limited range of gram negative organisms. It is found naturally as a fermentation product of Streptomyces fradiae. It acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosome subunit.
Effective against Mycoplasma sp., Leptospira sp., Erisipelas sp., Haemophilus pertusii, Morexella bovis, Borrelia anserina, Treponema hyodysenteria. Especially effective at infections caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum.
Tylosin is fast acting; it can be absorbed quickly after oral administration and distributed widely in the organs (mainly concentrated in lung, liver, kidney, spleen and gallbladder). Bioavailability of Tylosin is high, which makes Tylosin's action rapid and long lasting. Elimination is via bile (90%) trough the intestines. Milk and eggs are also a way of elimination.
