Enrofloxacin, a third generation fluoroquinolone, is a broad-spectrum, bactericidal antibiotic. Its activity is concentration dependent. The mechanism of action is to inhibit bacterial DNA-gyrase, prevent DNA supercoiling and synthesis. It has activity against some Gram-positive aerobes and a wide range of Gram-negative bacilli and cocci.
Effective against: E. coli, Salmonella sp., Enterobacter sp., Serratia sp., Proteus sp., Klebsiella sp, Shigella sp, Yersinia sp, Moraxella sp., Acinobacter sp.. Actinobacillus sp., Pasteurella sp, Leptospira sp, Camphylobacter sp, Citrobacter sp, Haemophilus sp, Ehrlichia sp, Coxiella brunetti, Staphylococcus sp., N.gonorhoeae, N.meningiditis, Corynebacterium sp., Chlamydia sp., V. cholarae, Mycoplasma sp.
Moderately susceptible are Strep. suis, Strep. agalactia, Strep dysgalactia, Strep. zoopidemicus. R. equi and Mycobacterium sp.
When taken orally enrofloxacin is well absorbed (60%), and although the presence of food in the stomach may delay rate it does not seem to affect its absorption capability. It reaches peak plasma concentration in 0,5-2 hours and keeps this level for 12 hours. Enrofloxacin is well distributed throughout the body, and can be found in small concentrations in the cerebral spinal fluid. About 30-40% of the drug is metabolized to ciprofloxacin. Enrofloxacin is eliminated by both renal and hepatic mechanisms.
Poultry:CRD, Mycoplasmosis, Colisepticemia, Coryza, Fowl cholera, Fowl typhoid, Paratyphoid, Salmonellosis, Streptococcal and Staphylococcal infections.
Calves, lambs:Colibacillosis, Pasteurellosis, Salmonellosis, Mycoplasmosis, respiratory and urinary system infections caused by susceptible bacteria and secondary bacterial infections subsequent to viral infections.
Poultry:
Pharmacological dosage:10 mg/kg live weight/day
Practical dosage:100 ml Mediquinol 10% / 1000 kg live weight.
For 1000 L drinking water:
0-14 days: 330 ml Mediquinol 10%
15-30 days: 400 ml Mediquinol 10%
31 days-slaughter: 280 ml Mediquinol 10%
Treatment period:3 days. In case of Salmonellosis 5 days.
